The W. Gibbs McAdoo letter, written November 8, 1860, describes the mood in Knoxville, Tenn., after Lincoln's election. He also tells of an incident in which someone tied a tin bucket and a note reading "Going out of the Union" to a dog and turned it loose on Gay Street.

This collection consists of a single letter written by William H. Polk on 17 May 1843 regarding the prospects of his party in the upcoming election. The letter, which is marked private, was written from Columbia. In it, Polk discusses the results of canvassing in Western and Middle Tennessee. He predicts that his party will gain three to seven members in the Legislature in the western counties and surpass the Whig Party in Middle Tennessee.

This collection contains a letter from October 13, 1843 written by William Houston to his brother-in-law Thomas Wier of Jacksboro, Tennessee.

This small leaflet records the oath of William I. Davis in which he denies the charge that Isham G. Leabow made against him. Davis swears that he did not tell Leabow that T.H. Ford, candidate for sheriff, had been paid $600 to run.

Tennessee Governor Willie Blount wrote this letter to Henry Newman, Jr. in Boston on December 10, 1811. In it, he expresses his hope that the United States will teach the indigenous people on the Wabash and their [foreign] aiders and abetters, that we are not only united but determined to be free and independent of all nations. He also discusses family and personal business, including Judge Hugh L. White and his family.
